Understand Business in 20 Minutes: A Beginner's Map
You don't need an MBA to understand business. Every company runs on the same simple loop. Here it is.
A business solves a problem people will pay for
Strip away the jargon and every business does one thing: it creates something valuable enough that people willingly pay for it. Before anything else, a business needs a real problem and a customer who feels it. No problem, no business.
Revenue, costs and profit
Money coming in is revenue. Money going out to run the business is cost. What's left is profit. A business survives only when revenue reliably beats cost over time — so founders obsess over both raising value and controlling spend.
Customers and how you reach them
You can have a great product and still fail if nobody knows about it. That's why sales, marketing and PR exist: finding the right people, earning their trust, and turning interest into a purchase — then into a repeat customer.
Operations: delivering it, again and again
Once you've promised value, you have to deliver it consistently — that's operations. Tasks, teams, suppliers, delivery and quality all have to run smoothly, or customers leave. Great operators make hard things look effortless.
Growth and the founder's job
Growth means serving more customers, or serving them better, without your costs blowing up. The founder's real job is to make good decisions with limited information, set the direction, and build a team that can run without them. Learn to think in this loop and you'll understand almost any business you meet.
